Ocular and Myenergi provide a very robust and reasonably priced AC charger in both the 7kw and 22kw AC options. Both with very user friendly apps to monitor your EV charger analytics and performance. The advantage of the Myenergi Zappi is it can be integrated with your solar, using any excess solar energy to charge your EV vehicle. RAD Electric is a preferred installer for both suppliers and can provide installation quotes.

Schenider and Delta AC chargers would be considered at the top end of the market. These chargers would be generally used in the commercial market.

There are two types of chargers: AC and DC fast chargers. 

AC Charger: Single Phase 7kW (32amp) or Three Phase 22kW (32amp). These chargers provide an AC supply to the car’s inverter and it converts the AC to DC current, which can in turn charge the EV’s battery. Inverters slow down the time it takes for an electric vehicle to fully charge, therefore resulting in slower charging times. 

DC Charger: 25kW - 350kW charging options. These options are not your standard residential charge options, and require a large amount of power from the grid. The huge advantage of these chargers is it bypasses the car’s inverter and provides DC fast charging directly to the car’s battery, resulting in a much quicker charge time. These chargers would be found at service stations and major tourist destinations. 

A common grid supply to a house or individual apartment is equal to or less than 63A single phase. If the intent is to install a 32A (7kW) charger, determining maximum demand by calculation will typically result in a determination that an upgrade to the supply to the building from the network is needed, because the addition of 32A to the existing loads in the home (oven, aircon, hot water service, etc.) will cause the total to exceed 63A. This approach will therefore lead to a lengthier installation timeframe and higher installation costs, it also might not be permissible as there might not be additional amps available from the grid. 

There are options to limit the available amp’s by the way of installing a current limiting circuit breaker on your existing installation, therefore limiting how many amp’s can be drawn. In the event of overload the circuit breaker will trip and not the ASP service fuses.This method has the advantage of being low cost, and easy to implement. For this method to work efficiently, the consumer needs to understand that all their home appliances cannot be running at the same time. Level 2 charger is an AC charger at up to 22kw (32amp, 3 phase) Typically installed at homes, apartments, workplaces, shopping centres and hotels. Anywhere a vehicle will be parked for a while.

Level 3 charger uses direct current (DC) to charge the car. Resulting in a much quicker charging time. Some car’s current technology is not compatible with these chargers.
