Broadly, there are two types of fibre optic cabling- single mode and multi mode. Both of these are usually selected to suit the installation requirements of the project, however as a general rule of thumb single mode is for long distance whereas multi mode is for shorter distances. Within these two fibre types there are then different versions, each of which has different speed characteristics. OS1-OS2 is for singlemode and OM1,OM3,OM4 is for multimode.Each of these fibre types then has many different options in terms of connector type. Picking a connector type depends on a few factors including existing cabling/ hardware (if any) and loss requirements. Some connectors include LC, SC, ST, FC, MPO, SC/APC. 

Yes, Fibre optics uses light to transmit data. Data is created and sent from a source, and “bounces” down the fibre optic cable over a wavelength, to the receiving end. 

We join fibre optic cabling using a special instrument called a “fusion splicer”. The splicer aligns the fibre optic cores using tiny motors- a fibre optic core is about one tenth of a hair in size. It then precision electrodes weld the fibre together using an electrical arc that creates a joint. Once complete, we test using specialist calibrated Fluke DSX 8000 test equipment that test a whole range of different parameters to ensure the link complies to the stringent test standards to ensure maximum network efficiency.

• Copper data cabling is limited to 90m in length. Any longer and the data transmission speeds and signals severely drop. The benefit of fibre is that it can be run for extremely long distances and in harsh environments without the weather affect it overtime like corrosion on copper

• - NBN is an Australian wide fibre optic ISP network. The speeds you can get out of fibre optic cabling is forever evolving and already has great capacity, it is limited by the ISP carrier and the active equipment but the cable has the ability to handle a lot greater bandwidth capabilities than compared to what data is currently sent down it and especially compared to copper.
